On 23rd September 2025, the Embassy participated in the launch of the TOKUSHUKAI Hospital on Tokunoshima Island, the birthplace of its founder, Dr. Torao Tokuda, who passed away on 10th July 2024. The ceremony was attended by over 300 participants, including representatives from the Kagoshima Prefectural Government, such as the Governor of Kagoshima Prefecture and the Mayor of Tokunoshima City, Board members of TOKUSHUKAI Medical Group, and other stakeholders associated with TOKUSHUKAI.
TOKUSHUKAI and Tanzania have a long-standing collaboration through the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) and the University of Dodoma (UDOM), which began in 2004. This partnership was formalized with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Health Cooperation and the Establishment of a Kidney Transplant Centre, signed on May 26, 2025, in Osaka, Japan, with a project value of JPY 1.5 billion (approximately TZS 28 billion).
Since the inception of this relationship, TOKUSHUKAI has made significant contributions to Tanzania's healthcare development. In 2012, the organization donated ten hemodialysis machines to BMH, and in 2018, the first kidney transplant in Tanzania was successfully performed. Various dialysis training sessions for Tanzanian medical staff have been conducted both in Tanzania and Japan, leading to the launch of the Kidney Transplant Centre. To date, 32 kidney transplant surgeries have been performed: 11 jointly by TOKUSHUKAI and BMH doctors and 21 independently by BMH doctors.
During the launch ceremony, the Embassy had an opportunity for discussions with Dr. Higashiue Shinichi (MD), Chairman of the Board of TOKUSHUKAI, and other board members. The Embassy expressed its appreciation for TOKUSHUKAI's ongoing dedication to Tanzania, which has been evident since 2004 and was formalized in the MoU signed in May 2025.
Dr. Shinichi, in turn, expressed his gratitude for the Embassy's participation and the excellent cooperation from the Government of Tanzania. He highlighted the importance of enhancing collaboration between TOKUSHUKAI, UDOM, and BMH to further strengthen the Kidney Transplant Centre, with the goal of saving many lives. He also mentioned his plans to visit Tanzania in early December 2025 to solidify this cooperation, during which he intends to visit the Kidney Transplant Center project site at BMH and engage in discussions with high-ranking Tanzanian Government officials related to the project.
