On 2nd July 2025, His Excellency Ambassador Baraka Luvanda visited Terumo Corporation’s Medical Pranex facility in Kanagawa, Japan as part of the Embassy's efforts to strengthen public-private partnerships (PPP) in healthcare. The visit provided insights into Terumo's medical innovations and its commitment to improving global healthcare access, particularly in Africa.
Ambassador Luvanda and his delegation explored Terumo’s Corporate Exhibition and received presentations on the company’s programs and initiatives in Africa. These programs and initiatives focus on the TRI-PCI cardiac catheterization training program and a comprehensive care pathway for Sickle Cell Disease, which includes screening, diagnosis, treatment, and the stabilization of blood product supply chains.
Ambassador Luvanda also learned about Terumo’s existing installations in Tanzania, which include eight Trima systems that support blood services in Dar es Salaam as well as Optia devices currently in use in Mwanza, Dodoma, and Dar es Salaam. These devices assist in treating Sickle Cell Disease and facilitate stem cell collection for cancer care.
As Terumo aligns its mission with Japan's Africa Health and Wellbeing Initiative (AfHWIN) and TICAD9, future collaborations are anticipated to enhance impact and support Tanzania’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals.
Ambassador Luvanda expressed gratitude to Terumo Corporation for its ongoing partnership and affirmed the Embassy's commitment to supporting initiatives within the Tanzanian health sector.
