On December 1, 2025, His Excellency Anderson Mutatembwa, Ambassador-Designate, held a meeting at the Chancery with three representatives of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), a prominent Japanese financial institution. SMBC currently maintains an established relationship with Kubota Corporation of Japan, has executed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Tanzania’s CRDB Bank, and collaborates closely with Agricom Company of Tanzania.
The meeting commenced with brief introductions, during which SMBC presented an overview of their engagement with Tanzania. The representatives noted that their collaboration with Kubota and Agricom has been active since 2024. They referred to their participation in a Tanzanian Investment Seminar held in May 2024 in Tokyo, where discussions with Mr. Gilead Teri, the then Executive Secretary of the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), took place. Furthermore, they detailed subsequent engagements with the Embassy, including Kubota’s mission to Tanzania in August 2024 and a Tanzanian delegation's factory visit to Kubota’s Tsukuba facility in June 2025. SMBC also highlighted the MOUs signed during TICAD 9, which include Kubota's MOU with SMBC to expand operations in Africa and SMBC's MOU with CRDB regarding trade finance for agricultural development, among others.
The SMBC delegation articulated their aspirations to enhance their involvement in Tanzania, particularly in establishing a tractor assembly plant to support the national initiative to procure tractors aimed at empowering small-scale farmers.
In response, H.E. Mutatembwa provided a comprehensive update on the general situation in Tanzania and assured the SMBC delegation of the Embassy’s commitment to closely monitor pending matters, especially about the Government’s tractor procurement plan. He affirmed that the Embassy would engage with the Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant authorities in Tanzania and would deliver updates as further information becomes available.
