On 9th June 2022, H.E. Ambassador Baraka H. Luvanda met Ambassador Jun SHIMMI, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary for Human Rights Affairs and TICAD at the Chancery. Ambassador Shimmi was accompanied by Ms. Okumura Mari, Assistant Director of the Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. 

Ambassador Shimmi stated that his call was meant to renew the request for support from the Government of Tanzania for the candidature of Professor Teraya Koji to become member of the Human Rights Committee (CCPR) for the term 2023 – 2026. He stated that because of the time constraint, Prof. Koji is already in the New York, to prepare for the elections which will take place on 17th June 2022. 

Ambassador Luvanda thanked Ambassador Shimmi for the visit and for sharing the message from the Government of Japan. He assured him of the positive feedback from the Government of Tanzania based on the close and long-standing historical relations which exist between Tanzania and Japan. Ambassador Luvanda confirmed to Ambassador Shimmi that Prof. Koji has the right credentials for the post and that he stands out to fit well in that position. He promised to follow up on the feedback both from the capital and New York.

The duo touched also on the ongoing preparations for TICAD 8 to be held on 27 - 28 August 2022 in Tunis, Tunisia. Ambassador Shimmi expressed his hope to see Tanzania being represented at the Summit at the highest level.
