On Friday, 27th May 2022, H.E. Baraka H. Luvanda received Dr. AKIZUKI Hiroko, Japan’s candidate for re-election to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) nominated by the Government of Japan to run for the re-election of CEDAW’s membership. Dr. AKIZUKI was accompanied by Mr. NAWATA Hiroshi, Principal Director for Gender Mainstreaming Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan. Ms. Edna D. Chuku (First Secretary) also attended the meeting. 

Dr. AKIZUKI was very pleased for the warm welcome and explained that the purpose of her visit was to introduce herself as Japan’s candidate to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and to ask for the support from Government of Tanzania. She further expressed her thoughts for running for the second time, as her deep conviction of making the world a place where all women and girls can choose their way of life as they wish without any form of discrimination. If re-elected, she will continue to work for the promotion of efficiency and effective implementation of the Convection, she said. 

In his remarks, Ambassador Luvanda congratulated Dr. AKIZUKI for the work well done during her first term as member of CEDAW which he said would put her in the best position to win the confidence of voters including Tanzania. He pledged to convey the request to relevant authorities in the capital and in New York.

Ambassador Luvanda assured Dr. AKIZUKI of the support from Tanzania as a long-time friend of Japan and asked the delegation to draw the attention of the relevant department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan on Tanzania’s request for support for the seat at the Council of Administration of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
