On 7th December 2023, the Embassy received Mr. Sato Noriaki, Deputy Director General of the Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan, accompanied by Mrs. Miho Saeki, Director of International Statistics Affairs.The purpose of their visit was to submit a request by Japanese Government for its candidature for membership at the United Nations Statistical Commission for the period of 2025-2028. The elections will take place during the Management Meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in April 2024, in New York. 

Mr. Sato revealed that Japan seeks re-election to the Commission as it currently serves its four-year term ending in 2024. He stated that Japan is desirous to continue to serve in this Commission, rendering its knowledge, experience, and expertise.  He further informed that two countries will be rotated from the Asia-Pacific region in the next elections, while three countries, namely Turmenistan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Japan, have expressed interest in being nominated, so far. 

Following the brief introduction and demonstration of Japan's tangible impact on the international statistical community, the Embassy assured Mr. Sato that they would submit the request to Capital for consideration.
