On 25th November 2023, the Embassy attended the 101st Foreign Language Festival, organized by the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) at the Campus to celebrate the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds of various countries around the world.
As Kiswahili language is among the foreign languages being taught at the University, it was decided that the festival starts with a 30-minute Swahili drama performance titled "The One-Handed Girl," performed by a 2nd-year student majoring in African studies. The play portrayed the rich culture of Tanzania and was presented in both Swahili and English, captivating the audience with its vibrant colors and rhythms.
After the opening ceremony, the Embassy staff had the opportunity to visit the African pavilion, named as "kukutana" (Swahili word). The pavilion was a feast for the senses with its vibrant colors and aromas, showcasing and selling African food. Among the popular dishes served on the day was the "mchuzi wa kuku", a spicy African chicken stew which was accompanied by roasted potatoes, a savored flavour which was a perfect representation of the rich Tanzanian cuisine.
